Unplanned
NO! Fear not, I am not pregnant.
But lots of stuff has been happening to show that you can't always plan ahead (as I normally like to do).
Rory was sick last week and last Friday they put him on an antibiotic for his ear infections. He has hated taking the medicine and it has been a huge struggle to get it down him (understatement of the year). But there has been no more fever and he has not been quite as crabby so I thought we were still getting over it.
I was in two minds as to whether or not to take him to his swim class on Wednesday morning but he seemed very keen and did his little 'I'm eager' dance as we went in so he was quite happy to be in the water. Howevef 10 minutes into the 30 minute class he was sick. In the pool. I thought he had just drunk their pool water but it came back up - ALL his breakfast. Chocloate milk etc. In the pool. There were 5 other parents/children in the pool but even though no one screamed I told the instructor.... "CLEAR THE POOL!" she shouted (quite rightly) 5 times. People couldn't have run faster to escape if there had been a shark in there I tell you. Oh the shame. I was as red as the pregnant woman's swim suit. We stood like lepers at the side of the pool, wrapping ourselves in towels whilst all the other parent/toddlers went into the larger, puke free pool. Rory was quite baffled why we were leaving earlier. So we went off home and he had his nap and I got rid of my embarrassment on the treadmill.
Fast forward to later the same day and we were all home, I was getting tea ready and Rory was clinging to my leg in the kitchen. Also as I was getting things out of the fridge. As though he were on the set of ER and someone had rigged up an elaborate puke tube, off he went again - all the vomit - pouring out of his wee mouth, all over me, him, the floor and INTO THE FRIDGE. I kid you not. He didn't cry (neither did I but I was tempted) and was fine afterwards but I was beginnig to think that maybe we weren't out of the woods with his ears and the swimming pool wasn't just a one off.
It snowed during the night Wednesday into Thursday which is quite common. We were to expect 1 inch, we got 5. For some reason (maybe as I was taking the kids to school) the traffic was bad after this snow storm. It took 35 minutes drive to get them to school (yesterday) which wasn't so bad but on the trip back it took us 50 minutes to get home - lots of cars not getting traction at traffic lights etc really slowed things down and there was a lot of over-cautious driving which was bizarre as it wasn't even the first snowfall of the season. Anyhow, as we were stuck in the car on the return jouney, I was trying to call the Pediatricians office which is supposed to open and collect calls as of 8.30am. Except they were probably stuck in the traffic too. Let me just point out that their office is quite near Bee and Paddy's school so the idea was to try and get an early appointment on my way back from dropping them off at school. But they only switched their phones back on at about 8.50 (when I was almost home) and they gave us a 9.20 appt so we literally got in the garage and went straight to the appt.
Rory's ears looked worse apparently. The antibiotics we have struggled with for 6 days...haven't worked at all. New antibiotics prescribed.....new trek to Target to get prescription filled....Which luckily is once a day only and easier to hide in juice etc.
So the trip to drop Bee and Paddy at school is normally 7.25am - 8.15 round trip. It turned into 7.25 - 11.15 yesterday with the Drs, picking up medicine etc. Rushed home to give Rory his nap and then had to wake him to get him and Mac to the swimming pool for his 1pm lesson (Mac). Luckily I didn't see anyone from the previous day....and the small pool was back in use (no vomit to be seen).
Swimming lesson over, back home, quick snack, back to school to get Bee and Paddy (luckily the roads are fine by this stage) and straight on to horse riding - drop Bee off for her hour riding whilst I take the boys grocery shopping and treat myself to a Starbucks. Get Bee from riding at 5.10pm and the end is in sight. Should take us 20 minutes tops to get home. Then dinner and bed.......for the kids at least......
BUT we didn't know the President (Geroge Bush) was doing a fundraiser in our little area. Oh yes, and so all roads were blocked off whilst his motorcade was moving around. It probably took him a minute to get through the streets but in their preparing for security etc it was a good 25 minutes that the lights flashed, all the traffic lights were red and people were doing illegal U turns to try and find a quicker route (we did, there wasn't such a thing). Turns out George was at Hubby's friend's father's house about a mile away from us - hence the traffic issues - but by this stage in the day, with all the kids...it was not good at all. Also having to expalin Secret Service detail etc to the kids was sort of funny but something I didn't need. And I quite agreed with Paddy when he said 'But why would they think a mom and her 4 kids would want to shoot the President? Can't they just let us through and leave all the others here?'
Got home, made dinner, got the younger two in bed....hubby was also late home. I had been planning to go to the movies (yes again) as I wanted to see 'Cassanadra's Dream' which was going to be on only until today (Friday) so once hubby was home I headed off for a bit of peace at the movies (in the opposite direction to George).
However the 7.20 showing was cancelled for a special presentation of Fools Gold (?) so I had to wait until 9.50pm (not happeneing) or see something else....and the only thing I hadn't seen at that time was 'The Bucket List'. It was ok - sort of got into it after the first 45 minutes - then the screen went all black, the fire alarm lights flashed and the automatic voice came on to tell us to leave the building.
20 minutes later in below freezing temps outside we were offered tickets for future shows or their promise to show the remainder of the movie once the firemen had said ok......turned out it was fumes from the popcorn machines that had triggered the alarm...I kid you not. I stayed and watched the end of the movie before heading home just after 9pm. NO police, no traffic, no presidential motorcade.
Got home and hubby was throwing up. Didn't even flinch after the day we'd had. Slept well. Surprisingly.

Good Lord! What a rough patch. I hope you guys recover for this weekend. If you have a sick hubby throwing up....I dare say, will the kids get it? And, I would've freaked out about the vomit in the pool, too. Whoopsy! Paddy's right. You should get special permission to do your thing when you have a car full of kids. I hope the new antibiotics help poor Rory.
Screw your MIL, you need another spa day stat! That's serious drama for one mama!
